RE:          Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Update: All Starfish Family Services early childhood education locations

will close for the rest of the school year.

Starfish early childhood centers will close for the rest of the school year, following guidelines for social distancing from the CDC, sustained community spread CDC guidelines, Governor Whitmer’s closure of K-12 schools, and recommendations from both the Office of Head Start and Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency (Wayne RESA) to follow the school directives.

Starfish early childhood leadership will continue to monitor and assess the crisis and will develop a checklist and plan for reopening our classrooms and centers.  The teams will consider all the factors impacting center and home-based operations and prioritize the health and safety for our families and staff.  Starfish early childhood teams will continue to keep families informed.

Family Service Guides or Teachers will be reaching out to families over the next few weeks to schedule a time slot for families to pick up their children’s belongings, using a process to limit exposure as noted below, similar to food distributions.  Family Service Guides are currently working with some families who need medications from the child’s center.

  1. Families will receive notification regarding time slots for their child's classroom in which they can pick up their belongings.

  2. Each classroom will have an identified 30 minute block in which they can pull up to the school and pop their trunk (similar to food distributions).

  3. Staff will place their child's bagged belongings in the trunk, and families can be on their way.

Over the next few months, while the centers remain closed, Starfish will continue to support families with the following:

  • Starfish center teams and health and family service teams will continue to connect with families weekly.

  • Starfish teams will continue to coordinate with Gleaners to provide food distribution to families at four of our center locations.

    • Cecil

    • Covenant House

    • Hiveley

    • Marygrove

  • Starfish teams will continue to provide meals for families weekly at Hiveley.

  • Starfish teams will continue to provide essential needs like diapers, wipes and other supplies to families weekly as we are able.

  • Starfish teams will continue to update the educational resource page for families weekly.

Here are recommendations from Governor Whitmer’s office for Individuals and families at home:

  1. Learn about the signs and symptoms of COVID-19. Symptoms include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

  2. If you have respiratory symptoms, STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK. Call your health care provider’s office in advance of your visit.

  3. Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, like doorknobs, keyboards, cell phones, and light switches.

  4. Communicate and reinforce best practices for washing hands and covering coughs and sneezes.

  5. Be prepared if there is COVID-19 in your household or a disruption of daily activities in your community. For example, maintain a supply of medications, food, and other essentials in your house. Consider alternative shopping options such as curbside pickups or online deliveries.

  6. Access services as much as possible online or by phone.
